When good infrastructure is available, cycling is an activity the whole family can enjoy.

In 2012 many young families took the Park and Ride option to enjoy the ride to Bikefest along beautiful, safe, off-road cycle paths ranging from 1km to 6km in length.

The Family Friendly Cyclespace, sponsored by Newcastle Permanent, was the hub of children’s activities at Bikefest.

Free workshops provided ‘new riders’ (small children) the chance to to play and practice on a range of bikes supplied by Drift Bikes Revolve program. Colouring in, as well as face painting and biodegradable helium balloons from Newcastle Now kept the youngsters entertained while parents looked on from the nearby cafe.

Confidence inspiring training courses for 12+ year olds on safe cycling and bicycle maintenance were run by Austcycle accredited trainers.

Around Bikefest there were many other activities for children, including beginner Parkour obstacle courses run by Parkour NSW, encouraging kids to be active and healthy.
